Community Wellness Day

When: Saturday, May 6, 2023 Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Location: University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center Outpatient Care Center (OCC) 255 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie, MD 21061 Campus map Community Wellness Day will take place on the fourth floor of the OCC The Caring Cupboard bus will be parked outside of the OCC.

Details: University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) employees and community volunteers will offer free health screenings, healthy food options and family fun activities during Community Wellness Day on Saturday, May 6, 10am -1pm. The hospital is co-hosting the health fair with Chase Brexton Health Care. The event is one of several hospital initiatives aimed at bringing healthcare services and resources to Anne Arundel County residents. The Caring Cupboard mobile grocery store – a renovated school bus will make its debut outside of the OCC during the Wellness Day event. The mobile pantry will offer participants and community members a chance to shop for non-perishable items and other essential food products. As community anchors, UM BWMC and its parent organization the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) are committed to tackling the complex problem of food insecurity in Maryland communities. Through connections with local leaders, UM BWMC and identified inconsistent access to healthy options, coupled with a lack of transportation, as two of the main drivers of food insecurity in nearby communities. In response, UMMS awarded a $50,000 impact award grant to Caring Cupboard in fall 2022 that funded the transformation of a school bus into the mobile pantry that can deliver essential grocery items directly into the neighborhoods where it is needed most. By providing healthy options and other pantry essentials directly into local communities, UM BWMC is driving long term improvements in community health.
